Exceptional voices, but...

I was frankly surprised at the quality of the voices, after reading that several key roles were assigned to local residents. However, English Bernhard (Eponine) was exceptional, and as good as (or better than) any I've heard on Broadway. Really a treat to hear her sing, and I'll bet she's got a wonderful future before her in live performance. Similarly, Riley Campbell (young Cosette) and Reed Shannon (Gavroche) were as good or better than those I've seen on Broadway. Bruce Landry (Marius) and Chuck Wagner (Javert) were the best, by far, in their roles, that I have ever heard anywhere. On the downside, the costuming was subpar (what WERE those large piles of sheets on the nuns' heads? could Javert's hat GET any bigger?? and who hemmed Cosette's dresses? did anyone think about how high up her dress the audience could see when she danced during the wedding scene? I feel sorry for the first six rows); the staging was weird and distracting (why did Marius climb over a fence that only a few minutes later was easily opened at a gate, that itself had a large enough gap that Eponine even later easily slipped through? why didn't they stage the "ghosts" in "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables" as is done on Broadway, instead of the weird, highly lit tableau(s) overlooking the tavern?); and the orchestra had pitch and tempo problems, in addition to failing to allow sufficient time for applause before quickly moving on to the next song, so that many of the singers missed their cues (were we really in that big a rush?). Overall, the singing was good enough that it greatly outweighed the amateurishness of the "support" elements, but it would have been wonderful for all facets to be as professional as the singers!
